Mr Kirby performed a gastric sleeve on me. He was a fantastic surgeon and explained everything perfectly to me. All appointments with him were well done and he took his time, not rushed. Highly recommend

Dr Kirby performed an emergency repair of hiatus hernia and gastric volvulus on my 75 year old mother. Without a doubt this saved her life and has led to her being able to eat and drink normally for the first time in years. Because of Covid restrictions, mum was not allowed visitors in hospital and we couldn't attend any consultations with her. Dr Kirby was very patient with mum, explained everything and undertook a very long and serious operation on my mum successfully. He telephoned immediately when he came out of surgery (after 10pm on a Friday night) to keep us informed. I would recommend Dr Kirby to anyone, and would love to be in his hands if I ever needed surgery.

I was referred to Dr Kirby approximately 2 1/2 years ago. During my first appointment he explained everything I needed to know about the surgery I was considering. Once he’d explained everything, he checked I still wanted to proceed before continuing with the consultation. At every stage of that & subsequent appointments he checked my understanding of the process & procedure prior to continuing to the next stage. Once in in hospital, again, he checked my understanding of the surgery & checked I wanted to continue. After the surgery he was there to check on me & make sure everything was ok. I was due to go home within a few days of surgery but, because of a small problem, I had to stay in hospital longer. Again, Dr Kirby’s way of dealing with the situation & resolving my set back was to explain everything but very reassuring & put me at ease. I appreciate that a majority of what I’ve said is what doctors/surgeons do as standard but, I’ve had several major surgeries & it’s the way Dr Kirby dealt with me that sets him apart from many of my previous surgeons. He was so caring in all aspects of the process & didn’t talk to me in a condescending manner as I’ve had previously with other surgeons. Even after the surgery in my follow up appointment, again it was a two way conversation about my surgery & my journey forward rather than me being ‘spoken’ down to, again as has happened before. I also have to mention the team that work with Dr Kirby. I know that a ‘bad’ leader can be reflected through their team but in this case, a good leader has definitely been reflected through the team. The team are as caring & conscientious & follow a similar ‘bedside manner’ as Dr Kirby. Very friendly & checking my wellbeing at every stage of the process. As we know, we’ve had the challenges of Covid laid before us & for me it extended my journey by about 18 months but, during that time I had several calls from Dr Kirby’s team to make sure I was ok & offer support if needed. So the whole team from the top down have been fantastic. I can honestly say, I feel the Shrewsbury & Telford hospitals are definitely better off with Dr Kirby as one of their surgeons for all the reasons written above & I can’t praise him enough for the care I have received.

Mr Kirby has truly saved my life, if it wasn't for my Gastric Bypass I probably wouldn't see my 30th Birthday. Mr Kirby has an amazing bedside manner, always explains things in full and is always happy to answer any questions. I can't thank him enough for the lifeline he has given me.
